Becoming a Croupier
What is a croupier?
A croupier operates and controls the games that take place on the tables in all casinos. These are mainly, American Roulette, Blackjack and Casino Stud Poker, although many casinos offer other games. As a croupier you ensure that the game you control runs smoothly, with speed, efficiency and a very high degree of accuracy.
What qualities and qualifications do you need?.
At the moment you do not require any formal qualifications to become a croupier.
However to work in a UK casino, all students (or trainee croupiers) require a license, this is known as a personal functional license (PFL) to work in each particular London/UK Casino, issued by the ‘UK Gambling Commission’.
Addition to the PFL you are required to undergo a standard CRB check (criminal record check), have a National Insurance Number and undergo table test after 5 weeks of your training.
You will receive a London Academy Training Certificate at the end of your training, You will be assisted in this process of completing all paperwork relating to your PFL.
We have available our own solicitor who can sign ID for PFL's.
What qualities are required?
Certain qualities are needed in order to become a skilled croupier. These are:
- Overall appearance and grooming
- Reasonable mental arithmetic agility
- Distinguishing different colours
- Manual dexterity
- Very effective interpersonal and communication skills-
You will be required to be highly accurate, with speed and efficiency, well disciplined and discrete. However these are skills that we at the Academy train and develop in you over your 5 weeks training. Overall you need to be positive with a determination to succeed.
What kind of salary can I expect?
Once you finish your training and secure a place in a London Casino, your basic starting salary will probably be in the region of approx. £16,000-£20,000 per year plus generous tips (For UK provincial casinos the full time salary is approximately £12,000 to £16,000 per annum). Once you gain more experience, you will see your salary rise progressively with other opportunities for promotion such as an “Inspector” where you oversee other croupiers.
